If the condition is not treated, the skin ulcer will progress to the point that a rupture in the skin will take place. The tears in the skin will usually have a clear liquid discharge, and the area will continue to redden.

Treating a skin ulcer can be as simple as using an over the counter ointment that contains antibiotics. This is especially true of the condition is caught early in its early stages. However, it is possible for an untreated skin ulcer to progress to the point that the only way to correct the situation is surgery. Under those circumstances, the infected section of skin would have to be removed completely. Skin grafts would be needed to cover the area, which can be a painful healing process.
