Why a Perforated Ulcer Hurts So Badly

Perhaps one of the most painful types of ulcer is the perforated ulcer. What is it about the perforated ulcer that brings about such high levels of pain, and what can you do about it? Here are a few facts about the perforated ulcer, and the treatments that will help you get past the pain and the condition.

It is important to understand how an ulcer develops. When for some reason, the natural acids in the stomach manage to weaken the lining of the stomach wall, a hole or lesion will develop. Because the stomach acids will continually flow over and around this weakened area, the hole will expand and eventually become large enough to allow the acids to pour into the abdominal cavity. When this happens, the pain from an ulcer can be almost unbearable.

It is very important to understand that treatment of a perforated ulcer early on is very important. Antibiotics and other medications can be used to stop the degradation of the protective lining of the stomach and actually begin to repair it. However, if left untreated, the situation will eventually reach the point of being life threatening. While there are some foods and herbs that may help with the pain, it is important to note that they will most likely have no actual healing effect on the perforated ulcer itself. Do not believe that just because you took something and alleviated the pain for a short time that you are cured. You will need medical help in order for that to happen.

Remember that failure to treat a perforated ulcer in a timely manner can lead to other health problems, and will most certainly require surgery during advanced stages. It is much smarter to see a doctor and begin a regimen of treatments early in the process.
