What are the Signs of a Peptic Ulcer? There are several types of stomach ulcers that can develop over time. Many of them progress from one type to a more serious type if left untreated. One of the most common types of stomach ulcers is the peptic ulcer. Here is a little information about the peptic ulcer and examples of how you can tell if you are developing a peptic ulcer. It is important to understand that the peptic ulcer tends to develop in the first section of the small intestines, commonly referred to as the duodenum. A peptic ulcer will develop when the stomach juices begin to corrode the protective wall of the duodenum, gradually weakening the wall and eventually leading to an open sore spot. Continued contact with the acidic stomach juices will aggravate the sore spot even more. When this takes place, you have developed a peptic ulcer. Perhaps the very first symptom of a peptic ulcer you will encounter is a rather dull ache in your lower abdomen. At first, it may be so subtle that you think it was nothing more than a mild reaction to something you ate earlier in the day. However, this will be different from the temporary discomfort you feel after eating. This dull ache will tend to stay with you into the night, long after your stomach no longer has anything to digest. Interestingly enough, eating something may bring temporary relief, although the pain will return later. Another sign of a peptic ulcer may be loss of any desire to eat. You simply will not have a craving for anything in particular and may even find that the idea of eating makes you a little sick to your stomach. Whatever symptoms you experience, it is imperative that you remember that any type of ulcer is nothing to ignore. Consult a physician if you experience any of these symptoms for longer than a day or two. Like all types of ulcers, the peptic ulcer can be treated successfully with antibiotics if caught early.
