A Few Basic Facts about Esophageal UlcersAside from stomach ulcers, esophageal ulcers are among the most common complaints today. In order to understand esophageal ulcers, one must understand the nature of these ulcers, signs that you may have this problem, and some information about how to treat these ulcers. Esophageal ulcers form in the lining of the esophagus. Most commonly, the reason for the formation of esophageal ulcers is a prolonged period of time in which excess stomach acids wash back into the esophagus and basically eat away at the lining. Eventually, a hole begins to appear in the esophageal wall, resulting in the ulcer. There are a number of reasons why the stomach acids may wash back into the esophagus and lead to the creation of esophageal ulcers. Bulimia is one prominent case of these types of ulcers, with the use of tobacco products running a close second. There are several indications that someone may be suffering from esophageal ulcers. Regular bouts with heartburn are an early warning sign. There may be an urge to regurgitate, and the result may appear to have traces of blood in it. In like manner, blood may also begin to show up in the stool. Along with the blood, you may find yourself feeling nausea for no apparent reason, and cramps coming on without any warning. These symptoms may appear within a couple of hours after eating, or may even suddenly appear if you skip a meal. Esophageal ulcers should be treated immediately. The sooner that you get to a doctor and outline your symptoms, the sooner you can be diagnosed properly and the treatments can begin. There may be other medical conditions that come into play as well; if that is the case, then doctors tend to treat esophageal ulcers in tandem with the root cause. In situations where the ulcer has been caught in its early stages, antibiotics may help to begin healing the damage. In more severe cases of esophageal ulcers, surgery will be necessary. Left untreated, esophageal ulcers can lead to life threatening conditions. The sooner you are diagnosed, the better your chances for swift and effective treatment.
